Set of Window 3 Hand -Embroidered Panels. Kalotaszeg
Beautiful, set of window drapes. Originating from the Kalotaszeg area of Transylvania, Romania. Hand embroidered on a home loomed hemp cloth
One panel would have been hung horizontally, the other two vertically. There is an example in the Bartok Bela memorial house in Budapest
The stitch is known as irasos or writing stitch. Traditionally the pattern was drawn onto the cloth usually by the "writing woman" of the village who specialised in drawing these patterns. It was then embroidered by another woman , usually for the dowry chest of herself or another female of the family.
The design features hearts tulips and flowers
The stitches in this piece have a knot/anchor at both ends this was a very time consuming way to embroider and nowdays these sticthes are usually embroidered with a knot or anchor at one end only which is quicker. The last image shows part of the reverse of one of the panels
Excellent condition. One of the down drapes is slighty faded or paler than the others.
Measurements;
Vertical drapes x 2, each 200 x 50cm
Horizontal x 1 280 x 46cm
