About vintage textiles
Where from?
Our vintage linen, hemp and embroidery has been carefully sourced from areas of Central and Eastern Europe with strong traditions of folk craft. Most of our vintage linen and hemp was home grown and processed without the use of pesticides.
The nature of the hand spinning and weaving process means that there may be some un-evenness in weave which adds to the charm of these pieces..
Hemp/linen history
Hemp and linen were both grown in these regions and it is often difficult to tell the difference. Hemp in particular softens and lightens with age and washing and more used so the older and more used the harder it is to tell them apart. Hemp was more commonly grown and used for sacks, linen for kitchen linen.
The history of these textiles gives a fascinating insight into folk and peasant culture. From the intricate embroidery that has been kept for decades in dowry chests to the sacks woven for everyday use every piece tells a story
